market is estimated to hit US$ 540 Million by the year 2010, while the global stem
cell market is expected to touch US$ 20 Billion mark, said Dr D Balasubramaniam,
SCRFI (Stem Cell Research Forum of India) president, in a statement that
ChennaiOnline published on 30 January 2007.

SCRFI is a society set up to assemble medical and biological scientists having
interest in stem cell research and to encourage scientific research in the field of
stem cell biology. The society held its 1st annual meeting & international
conference in Bangalore on 29 January 2007.

\"Medicine today is moving rapidly toward the development of more effective cures for
a host of diseases. In the past, doctors could usually only treat the symptoms of
illness — treatments rarely addressed the causes of disease. Today, many of
the cures being developed by scientists are based on advanced techniques that are
able to target the causes of disease rather than simply treating the symptoms and
stem cell research is gaining importance\", said Satish Totey, who is the
SCRFI’s Secretary and Director for Manipal institute of Regenerative Medicine,
at the conference.

Throughout India, there’re 15 centers for doing research on stem cell. Of
these five are performing extensive trials in cardiology’s field.
